Upon arrival, a short bus ride will take you to Machu Picchu, an extraordinary feat of Incan engineering and architecture. Serving as a sanctuary for the Inca emperor Pachacutec, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

In the morning, we suggest you return to Machu Picchu to explore more of the citadel’s attractions (second-day entrance not included, but can be requested).

You may visit the Intipunku, or “Sun Gate,” where the sun rises every day through this door, perfectly framed by the most important buildings of the citadel. Another highlight is the Inca Bridge, a remarkable stone structure that once served as an entrance or exit to the citadel. If you’re up for a hike, you can also climb Wayna Picchu (subject to availability), or “Young Mountain,” located opposite Machu Picchu. This ascent takes about an hour and leads to the “Temple of the Moon,” an underground complex that likely served the Inca elite (please note that re-entry to Machu Picchu and tickets for Wayna Picchu are not included in the original pricing). Finally, don’t miss the Puente del Inca, an incredible stone bridge that once served as an entrance or exit to the citadel.

In the afternoon, you’ll head to the Aguas Calientes train station for your return journey to Cusco.
