Antarctica Tour: Welcome! - Punta Arenas

Couple in Punta Arenas looking the horizon pver the sea.

  • Transfer from Punta Arenas airport to your hotel.

Start this Antarctica tour in one of the most visited cities in Patagonia Chilena, Punta Arenas. This port city at the shore of the Magellan Strait is the capital of the Magallanes and Antarctica Region in Chile. One of its most curious attractions is the Nao Victoria, a full-scale 16-century replica of the ship used by Fernand Magallanes to reach the area.

Upon arrival, we’ll be waiting to welcome you and then, we’ll drive you to your hotel in the city. Before the Antarctic tour and air cruise experience started, gather our staff at the Explorers House and go through the essential guidelines to tackle a trip to Antarctica and an air cruise. End the day with a welcome dinner and meet your next day’s travel partners.

Firsts Zodiac Expeditions - Night in Antarctic Vesell

Passengers on a zodiac boat spoting a seal on the white beach.

  • First expedition ashore – South Shetland Islands

During the following 3 days, you will navigate the West coast of Península Antarctica, and take different zodiac rides to the shore. Each will lead to a tailored experience of interesting sites. Guided by the experts, you’ll make the most of every single detail.

Destinations may change due to unpredictable weather which is common in the area. But, let’s talk about the possible places you’ll visit, even if not in the following order.

The first day you may ride a zodiac to explore the South Shetland Islands. Prepare to sail between floating icebergs and spot the Antarctic wildlife. In Antarctica, common animals you can see are Adela penguins, Albatros, and Weddell seals. There are no polar bears in Antarctica.

Expeditions a-shore usually take a couple of hours. In small groups only, you can choose to depart on one of the two daily tours.

Antarctica Tour, Second Day Explorations - Night in Antarctic Vesell

Spoting penguins on the coast in a Zodiac boat, Antarctica.

  • Zodiac ride to Antarctic Sound, Hope Bay, and other natural highlights

Antarctic tours start early in the morning when everyone gathers to enjoy breakfast onboard. Then, jump on the zodiac. Today you may explore the Antarctic Sound, a strait of water connecting the northeast and the west side of the Península Antárctica.

Here, you may pass by places like Hope Bay, and see the largest Adela penguin colony on the continent. It is also on this bay where Esperanza Argentine Base is settled, also the place of the first-born baby in Antarctica. Or enjoy some spontaneous whale watching, since these majestic animals offently wander the Antarctic Sound.

Another option to explore and enjoy is the Garlache Strait, known as “one of the most beautiful places” in Antarctica. Here you may discover some of the “jewels” of the continent like whales eating “krill”, numerous bergs, and, the most mysterious, a whaling vessel that sank in 1916.

Last Antarctic Tour - Night in Antarctic Vesell

A man watching the beautiful landscape of Antarctica.

  • Last day of activities in Antarctica

On your last day around the Antarctic Peninsula, another destination you may explore is Penola Strait, a narrow, less-than-a-mile strait. Nearby Penola Strait, discover the Wigging Glacier (also called “Middle Glacier”) and the Neumayer Channel, an amazing glacier-fringed waterway. Neumayer Channel is 15 miles, and also an impossible destination for larger ships.

Along the Neumayer coast, there is also a famous destination in Antarctica, Port Lockroy, a former British base. Its peculiar attraction consists of featuring the “southernmost post office” in the world, called the “Penguin Post Office”
