It is an ancient Andean Inca settlement built before the 15th century. It is said that it had a private purpose, but some of the constructions show a ceremonial character and it is presumed that it could have been a religious sanctuary. Both theories, palace or sanctuary, are compatible. Machu Picchu is considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering.
It is located in the Cuzco region, province of Urubamba, on the Sacred Valley of the Incas, 80 kilometers northwest of the city of Cuzco. It is located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, in the Andes mountain range at 2430 m.a.s.l.
The site is divided into two main areas: the agricultural area, formed by sets of cultivation terraces, and the urban area, which is where people lived and where the main civil and religious activities took place.
It has a tropical mountain climate originated by the rivers that cross the mountain range and form a canyon, like the Urubamba River. The temperature is warm and humid during the day and cools at night, varying between 12 and 24 ° C. The area is very rainy, the rainiest months are between November and March and these rains alternate constantly with moments of intense sunshine.
In Quechua, the natives of the Peruvian Andes, “Old Mountain”.
It can be visited walking and it is recommended to have a guide to understand its wonderful and mysterious history. You can go in one day from Cusco, but it is recommended to visit sleeping in Aguas Calientes or Sacred Valley the night before and / or after.

I chose to travel with Say Hueque due to flexibility of the tour arrangement. Price is reasonable too. The booking process with Karen was good, I'm rather happy with her service. All the hotels are pretty good and breakfast provided was reasonably good. No big issue with any of the hotels. Machu Piccu and Iguazu Falls( Argentina side) are definitely the highlights. Visit to the Devil’s throat brings the excitement beyond description. The boat ride we took on was unforgettable as well. The guide in Machu Piccu is outstanding as his description of the place is interesting and in great details. Unfortunately I didn’t remember his name. Definitely a wonderful knowledgeable young gentlemen. Diago(not sure if I got the name right.) is also an excellent guide. He knows the place very well and brought us to all the wonderful spots and managed to avoid or bit the crowds! A very caring person and likes to joke around which made the tour very interesting. There is nothing that did not meet our expectation. Although there was a bit of hiccups in our trip, somehow things were resolved, so no fuss. I do want to comment that the trip was well organised by Say Hueque. Everyone in every place has been very punctual, helpful and polite. Patricia and myself would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making our travel memorable. Would definitely recommend Say Hueque to my friends.
Dear Patty, It is difficult to express how wounder the trip is ! We feel so happy for all your arrangement especially my two kids birthday celebration. Also, it is our pleasure to share your service and comment with everyone! We found Say Hueque via internet search and decided to work with you from your first reply of my email question. Everything was pleasurable, memorable, considerate and caring. Special thanks to Patty and the guide for Cusco and Sacred Valley was great. Our favourite hotel was the Casa Andina Group, tidy and clean. Our favourite excursions have been to Machu Picchu and the Glacier. Best regards Florence Chen
