Argentina is the 8^th largest country in the world, and as such, the weather in Argentina varies greatly according to when and where one travels in Argentina.

There are significant differences in temperature from the North of Argentina to the South of Argentina. For example, while it may be hot and steamy in the jungles of Iguazu Falls along the Brazilian border, it may be freezing and snowy in the southern-most city of Argentina, Ushuaia.

That said, it is important to plan your Argentina travel keeping in mind that the weather in Argentina is nearly opposite to the seasons in the USA.

That is, winter in the USA will be warm and summery in most of Argentina (December-April), while summer in the USA will be cooler (and wintery in the south of Argentina) from May-August.

Unless you like steaming hot weather, it is probably best to avoid northern Argentina in the summer (December-March), when 90F temperatures and humidity are not uncommon, even in the shade. Argentina’s tropical and sub-tropical provinces include Chaco, Corrientes, Formosa, Misiones and Santiago del Estero, as well as portions of Salta, Santa Fe and Tucumán. In the Iguazu Falls region, it is common to experience warm to hot temperatures year-round with regular rainfall. However, with the heat and the rain comes lush vegetation and great opportunities to see wildlife. Due to the very hot and dry weather in Salta, it is best to visit these areas during the Argentine winter (May-September, during the North-American summer) when the weather is milder – 65F and sunny. Think southern Arizona in March.

The majority of central Argentina, including Buenos Aires, the Pampas (farmland) and Cordoba enjoys a moderate climate with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters. The weather in Buenos Aires is comfortable year-round, though during Argentina´s summer, from December-March, temperatures can reach 90F. Buenos Aires is a great place to visit throughout the year, but if one wants to avoid heat and humidity, it is better to visit Buenos Aires outside of the South-American summer.

Patagonia weather is unique and changes often. Summer and winter weather in Patagonia can be experienced sometimes in one day! That said, the best time to visit Patagonia for outdoor activities such as hiking or kayaking is during the South American summer, December-March, when temperatures warm up and are perfect for walking in the mountains. During the South American winter, June-September, snow is common in the region and tourists travel to Patagonia’s famous ski resorts such as Bariloche.

Tierra del Fuego is located in the southernmost region of South America and its capital, Ushuaia, is known as the southern-most city in the world. Home to rugged mountains and islands, Tierra del Fuego weather is cool, 60F during the South American summer (December-March) and sees lots of snow and rain from June-September, as well as significantly strong winds throughout the year.
