Travel to Argentina with Kids and Teenagers? Why Puerto Madryn Should Be on Your List

Patagonia Travel Argentina Travel Posted on 08/15/2025

Thinking of traveling to Argentina with kids and teenagers? Let’s talk about Puerto Madryn on Patagonia’s Atlantic coast and its privileged location near the Península Valdés, the biggest fauna reservoir in Patagonia, Argentina.

Families flock here not only for the postcard views but for the unforgettable experiences like diving with sea lions.

Many also come because Península Valdés is a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO.

Read the story of Julia, a travel expert in Say Hueque, and her family’s trip to Puerto Madryn this year, and get valuable insights from real travelers.

1. Why Puerto Madryn is a Family Favorite

  • Spotting whales and penguins: This is a playground for young explorers and seasoned adventurers alike. Spot whales just meters from the shore and walk alongside penguins and even snorkel with sea lions.

  • It’s safe, welcoming: The area is packed with activities that get you up close and personal with nature without sacrificing comfort or accessibility.

  • Peace of mind and plenty of bonding moments: For parents traveling with teens and kids, this means a life that does not involve Wi-Fi (yes, it’s possible!).

  • Dinosaur and Welsh influence: Nearby, you can travel to see a Welsh-type village and a dinosaur park.

2. Julia’s family trip to Puerto Madryn: “We were looking for a destination where we could enjoy nature, wildlife, the beach, and a bit of adventure”

Why did you choose Puerto Madryn as a family vacation destination? How old are your children?

I chose Puerto Madryn because my children, ages 6 and 9, have a week of vacation in September. We were looking for a destination where we could enjoy nature, wildlife, the beach, and a bit of adventure. We rented a car and explored freely for 7 days, allowing us to discover unique places and adapt to the family’s pace.

What was the most fun thing you did?

Without a doubt, the most fun was visiting the penguins at Estancia San Lorenzo! They took us in a truck to the beach, and there we walked among hundreds of them.

It was also great fun to rent bikes in Puerto Madryn to explore the coast: we went all the way to the beach, rode along sandy paths, and even saw flamingos.

A spontaneous and unforgettable moment was when, on the way to the estancia, we found a natural lagoon and jumped into the water. A total adventure!

What age groups do you think Puerto Madryn’s activities are best for?

I recommend the destination for families with children ages 5 and up. The activities are accessible, varied, and safe for the little ones, and there are plenty of opportunities for play, learning, and contact with nature.

What advice would you give to a family considering Puerto Madryn for their vacation?

My recommendation is to travel between mid-September and late October, which is an ideal time to see both whales and penguins.

Be sure to visit El Doradillo Beach, where you can see whales very close to the shore—an unforgettable experience for both adults and children!

I also suggest spending at least one night in Puerto Pirámides. It’s a small, picturesque town with beautiful beaches for walking, an ideal setting for enjoying the sunset, and it is also the departure point for whale-watching trips.
