Travel Tales of Argentina
Torres del Paine is a mystical destination. Massive mountain peaks and stunning glaciers dominate the open sky, while herds of wild guanacos roam the seemingly endless plains and valleys, creating a surreal and ancient feeling for all those who venture to the southern trip of South America.
For those in search of wide open spaces to satisfy their wanderlust, hiking the Torres del Paine W Circuit delivers Valle Frances (The French Valley) is one of the highlights of the famed W.
To reach this remote destination you have two options: either you arrive hiking from Los Cuernos or you get there with a catamaran trip across Pehoe Lake.
Torres del Paine W Circuit: One of the views of the Horns
Either if you get here with the catamaran or from Los Cuernos refuge, you will get after two hours (a little less from Los Cuernos) to the hanging bridge over the French River, located at the foot of the south east face of the Massif.
This spot is ideal for a short break for water while you enjoy the incredibly scenic vista.
You then continue along the trail until you reach the upper prospects of the valley. And from here, the entire group of geological formations of the high valley could be admired including the Hoja (Blade), Máscara (Mask), Espada (Sword), Catedral (Cathedral), Aleta de Tiburón (Shark’s Fin) and the magnificent Fortaleza! (Fortress). This is also the perfect place to sit down, relax and enjoy a hearty picnic lunch before walking to the nearby Mirador Britanico – which is about an hour from this main view. Consider if you are very tired, that the last bit might be exhausting. The view from this view point is really amazing, and it is fine if you just stay here.
But, if you decide to go up to the end, you will see the complete massif from a different perpective.
