Travel Tales of Argentina
Get all the information you need to plan your Mendoza vacations during the September – December 2016 Mendoza Airport closure.
Mendoza, heart of the wine region in Argentina, home to some of the most spectacular Andean landscapes, exotic thermal mountain spas and an exhilarating extreme sports hub, is all suddenly more difficult to access during Argentina’s spring/summer months. Unfortunately, the Mendoza airport is set for a refurb and you will be unable to book internal flights here during the upcoming months.
Aerolineas Argentinas dropped this bomb on their website about the Mendoza Airport closure: “Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral inform that the International Airport of the City of Mendoza – El Plumerillo (MDZ) «Governor Francisco Gabrielli», will be closed from September 7 to December 7 inclusive, 2016 due to runway maintenance works.”
Yes, good old maintenance works might be messing with your Mendoza mojo. One might think, it would be best to close the airport during the low seasons but in true unorganized fashion, the airport will be doing their refurbishments during these next up and coming months. Wine lovers; do not despair, as there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There are three other airports close to Mendoza in San Juan, San Luis and San Rafael, just 3 hours away from Mendoza. Aerolineas Argentinas have stated that passengers will have free access to a complementary shuttle service connecting these airports with the Mendoza Bus Station.
If you have already booked your flight, Aerolineas Argentinas are offering passengers the opportunity to bring their trip forward with one free date change from August 7, 2016 to September 6, 2016. Passengers also have the opportunity to postpone their trip to travel from December 8 to December 22, 2016 as a maximum term. The statement has also said passengers who want to travel on dates other than the ones established are able to do so, but they must pay the fare difference, if applicable, and respect their airfare validity. Passengers also have the option to make one free route change to the alternative airports in San Juan, San Luis and San Rafael. Passengers can also ask for a refund. Ultimately, if you already have a ticket, the best thing to do is contact your airline and see what is the best option for you. Here at Say Hueque, we will be able happy to help you with any questions you have about the transportation logistics of your Mendoza vacations.
The two main regional airlines, LAN and Aerolineas Argentina are not taking any new bookings to Mendoza for the time being. If you have yet to book flights for the months of September to December, you must book a flight to one of the nearby airports and arrange a ground transfer.
Alternatively, if you have some extra time on your hands during your Mendoza vacations, you may consider embarking on an adventure in Argentina by booking a long-distance bus. Night buses are available from Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Bariloche, Salta and Cordoba. The buses are not your standard local buses but rather come with 180 degree reclining seats, air conditioning, TV services, and Wi-Fi. The night bus from Buenos Aires takes around 12 hours and the best seat to go for is the Cama Ejecutiva which is the reclining bed mentioned above. Check out Andesmar and CATA for your Argentina bus travel needs.
Here at Say Hueque we want to make sure you have the best possible Argentina trip, so please feel free to contact us if you are concerned about your upcoming travel plans. We will make sure you arrive smoothly so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your Mendoza vacations sipping on the finest Malbec in town.
