Travel Tales of Argentina
Mendoza, Argentina has recently been named a finalist in the New 7 Wonders Cities campaign, capturing one of 21 available spots in the international contest. Sponsored by the New 7 Wonders organization, this competition was launched in 2012 with more than 1,200 nominees from around the world. Through various phases of voting, the list was narrowed to 21, with Mendoza landing among the ranks of cities including Chicago, London and Mexico City. Culminating in December, seven cities will be selected as the winners, each earning the right to call themselves one of the seven wonder cities of the world.
Famous for its wine production and picturesque setting at the base of the Andes Mountains, in terms of international recognition Mendoza is sometimes overshadowed by the country’s capital, Buenos Aires. However, those who’ve visited Mendoza know that it is wholly unique from Buenos Aires, a fact that intrigues thousands of travelers each year. Where Buenos Aires is a coastal, cosmopolitan city, Mendoza offers visitors a laid back atmosphere in which to explore its vast vineyards and scenic mountain trails. What was once a sleepy and undeveloped provincial capital has blossomed into an increasingly popular destination for wine connoisseurs and leisure travelers from all around the globe.
In fact, its selection as a finalist in the New 7 Wonders Cities contest is not the only international accolade Mendoza has received recently. Earlier this year it was recognized by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, in part for its significant transformation into an attractive tourist destination. Addressing Mendoza’s appeal, magazine editor Michael Schachner commented, “In the last 15 years, this desert wine region has advanced to become one of the top destinations for wine tourism.” With this growing international reputation and its warm and inviting culture, it is no wonder that Mendoza was selected as a finalist for such a prestigious award as the New 7 Wonders Cities list.
The New 7 Wonders Cities contest will contain one more elimination round, narrowing the field of candidates from 21 to 14, before the final selection of winners is chosen. Voting, which is open to the public and can be done through the New 7 Wonders website, will remain open until December 7, at which time the seven winning cities will be announced. While it is already a huge honor and major accomplishment to have been named a finalist, we are hopeful that those who have experienced the wonders of Mendoza will participate in the contest by casting votes for this extraordinary city. We know it deserves to be named to the winner’s list and together we can propel the city forward to capture the title of a New 7 Wonders City.
