Travel Tales of Argentina
While the idea of celebrating our friends is a universally accepted idea, we take it very seriously here in Argentina! The first International Friend Day was originally celebrated on the first Sunday of July, but over time, it eventually moved later in the month. Today, many different countries around the world celebrate the day on various dates and have their own traditions to honor the special day. In Argentina, however, its origins and official date are a little more unique.
Enrique Ernesto Febbraro, an Argentine professor was first struck with the idea for a national day to celebrate friendship when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon back on July 20, 1969. When Armstrong spoke the famous line, “One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind”, Febbraro was inspired. He selected that specific day as Friend’s Day, and began promoting it in any way he could. According to a quote from Febbraro, “I heard it being said that the landing on the moon was a grand gesture of friendship between humanity and the universe, the day was already decided!”
Febbraro wrote letters to hundreds of countries in his mission to establish July 20th as Friend’s Day. The first step in achieving the official celebration was taken when the Government of the Province of Buenos Aires authorized the celebration and sealed it with the legal mark.
Nowadays, with all the different social media platforms available to get in touch with people, many Argentines try to get in touch with old friends that they have lost contact with through Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook. Messages are sent to old friends, between family members, recent acquaintances and to general audiences.
Friend’s Day has definitely seen an increase in popularity in recent years, and in addition to it being celebrated in Argentina and other South American countries, it has been proclaimed an official holiday by the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations International Day of Friendship is now observed on the 30th of July and celebrates not only friendships between friends, but also friendships between people of all nationalities. It encourages peace and friendship between friends, family, people, countries and cultures.
But here in Argentina we still hold tight to celebrating Friendship Day on July 20th. So in the spirit of the day, we want to help you become friends with our country!
