Travel Tales of Argentina
Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango, the seductive and intricate dance of passion. Tango music can be heard playing in cafés and traditional neighborhoods, and there are more Buenos Aires tango shows and dance halls than you can count. Now imagine if all of this were concentrated into a two-week tango extravaganza: welcome to the Buenos Aires Tango Festival. From August 18 – 31, 2016, Buenos Aires will host its annual tango festival and world championship of tango. Join over 600,000 attendees and celebrate the art, music, dance, and sentiment that embodies tango in Buenos Aires!
The Buenos Aires Tango Festival was created to help grow the national and international movement of tango. The history of tango has been embedded in the streets of Buenos Aires since the 1800’s when European, Gaucho, and African influences mixed in the city’s port neighborhoods. Now, the dance is praised for its sensuality and passion, and it has been recognized by UNESCO on the organization’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Even if you don’t plan on dancing in the world championship competition at this year’s Buenos Aires Tango Festival, you can still enjoy a variety of other events celebrating the tradition of tango in Buenos Aires. The opening celebration is called La Festival, an enormous outdoor milonga (a traditional tango dance hall) where thousands of tangueros dance in the streets. Across the city, La Festival offers a week of dance shows, lessons, milonga nights, recitals, film screenings, and musical performances. There are opportunities to participate for dancers of all skill levels, from the complete beginner to the milonga queen.
The second half of the Buenos Aires Tango Festival is the Mundial de Tango, the Tango World Championship. Watch the world’s best dancers compete for the title of the world’s best tango dancer. This is one competition that’s just as exciting for the participants as it is for the fans.
It doesn’t matter if you are a lifelong fan of tango or just discovering this incredible dance! Everyone will be able to participate, create, and discover during the unforgettable Buenos Aires Tango Festival.
