Travel Tales of Argentina
So you want to see what it’s like at the end of the world? Grab the warmest clothes you own and head way down south to Ushuaia–the southernmost town in the world, nicknamed “Fin del Mundo,” or End of the World. The windswept town, perched on a steep hill, is surrounded by the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel. There are many attractions here, from the picturesque lighthouse in the distance of the cold foggy sea to the nearby “Penguin Island.”
With few inhabitants but plenty of nature to explore, Ushuaia is one of the most special Argentina vacations. It’s the closest you can get to Antarctica, and if you’ve always wanted to take an adventure to Antarctica, this is your departing spot!
Faro Les Eclaireurs
Any postcard of Ushuaia has the classic shot of the red lighthouse above a dark and misty sea. When you arrive in the town, you’ll recognize the Faro Les Eclaireurs, the quaint red lighthouse, from the photos. On your Argentina vacations you can snap your own photo and say you’ve seen the southernmost lighthouse in the world!
Boat Tours
A great way to sightsee in Ushuaia is by boat. Hop on and tour the area by water. Many tour companies offer excursions that explore the Beagle Channel, right off the coast of Ushuaia. Visit several islands in the channel to view the native plant and animal life, including sea lions and penguins! Take a comfy and warm catamaran, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can rent a sailboat or canoe.
Martillo Island
Known as “Penguin Island” for its penguin colonies, this is a can’t-miss! Many boat tours take you to this popular destination. Don’t worry, these penguins are used to visitors and love the company and attention so you can get pretty close to them. This might be the highlight of all Argentina vacations, for kids and adults alike. Where else in the world can you take a selfie with wild penguins?
Ushuaia Prison: Museo Maritimo de Ushuaia
On a dimmer note, the Museo Maritimo de Ushuaia is housed in what used to be a penal colony. Fascinating as well as slightly depressing, the prison is a place to understand the horrendous conditions prisoners faced while there. The building also as a maritime museum, which features the early explorers to Antarctica including Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. It’s a great place to brush up on some history, or learn something new!
